Pro Arte Conservatory Strings (9/12/2005)
The OPACO organization welcomes our newest ensemble, the Pro Arte Conservatory Strings (PACS). This preparatory group is for young musicians between the ages of eight and 14 and will play music on the level of Suzuki books three through six. PACS is designed to train fine string players to move into OPAYCO. There is some overlap between age ranges for the two groups, allowing for the development of skill levels among older students and maturity among extremely talented younger musicians.
PACS will rehearse every Monday during the season from 4:30 to 6 p.m. The group will perform in combined concerts with OPACO and OPAYCO in December and May, and at the beginning of the OPAYCO concert Feb. 19 and the OPACO performance on March 18.

Gala Concert in Japan (8/15/2005)
The board of directors has accepted an invitation from the Sapporo Philharmonic for OPACO/OPAYCO to participate in a joint performance at Kitara Concert Hall on June 4, 2006, at 3 p.m., to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Japanese orchestra. This follows a concert by the three groups held last season in Portland. Sapporo is Portland's official "sister city."
Participation in the tour is optional, and spouses are welcome. We are currently seeking donors to help offset the musicians' expenses for the trip. OPACO/OPAYCO is scheduled to depart Portland on May 27, returning on June 5. Additional information will be posted on this site as it becomes available.

OPACO Board Elects New President (8/28/2005)
Christine Kammer Dungan was named president of the Oregon Pro Arte Chamber Orchestra effective August 28. She succeeds Michael O. Shaw, who will continue to serve the organization as president emeritus.

She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and holds a Master of Divinity degree from Columbia Theological Seminary and Master of Arts from Vanderbilt University, where she is a doctoral candidate in Hebrew Bible.
Rev. Dungan's professional background includes a variety of positions in journalism and public relations. She was an editor and classical music columnist for Portland's Community Press newspapers and worked with the Peter Britt Gardens Music and Arts Festival in the 1970s.
Rev. Dungan is looking forward to her involvement with OPACO and the challenge of bringing high-quality chamber music to audiences in the metropolitan area. She can be reached by voicemail at the OPACO offices, 503.570.6211, or via email at chrisdungan1@msn.com.
